Chapter 25

I’m dead meat.

Fear paralyzed my body, and coldness seeped through my bones. I watched the door handle apprehensively. In my panic, I hadn’t bothered to lock at it. Now that I stared at it, I realized Miran was right.

There was no lock on it.

Miran breathed deeply before continuing, “That particular prison is designed not to have locks in the back offices. There was an incident where an inmate locked themself in a room and refused to come out. After that, the locks came off.”

I was breathing heavily, and I was sure Miran could hear it.

“For now, you’re safe…” his voice trailed off.

But there’s no guarantee for how long.

I could almost hear the unspoken words.

“I’m coming to you, okay?” he tried to reassure me.

“Are you coming from home?” I asked.

“Yes,” he confirmed.

Noises of him fumbling in the background and closing a door unsettled me. The prison was on an island, and it was at least forty-five minutes from his home. Even if he sped down the highway with his siren, it would take at least twenty minutes for him to get to me. I hoped it wouldn’t be too late.

“Keep your phone with you, and don’t move from there,” he warned.

I nodded even though he couldn’t see me.

I didn’t know how to end the call.

I’d never been involved in a prison riot before, but it didn’t ever end well for the officers in the prison. And I was a woman in an all-male prison. Maybe, if I was in a female prison, I might have been spared. If I was in an all-female prison, I could have even blended in and worn their uniform, but I couldn’t do that here. I stuck out like a sore thumb.

Miran was still on the call.

“Goodbye,” I said, at last, my voice crackling.

He sighed deeply before saying, “Don’t you dare, Lia… Didn’t you say to me once, that this isn’t goodbye? We will meet again.”

A smile broke through my frozen face. “We will.”

Then, I hung up.

I looked at the battery percentage of my phone.

I still had sixty percent.

I turned the brightness off my phone, so the screen didn’t glow in the dark. I hesitated before I placed my phone on silent. I could always check my phone every few minutes. I couldn’t have it vibrate and make myself known. I would be caught then. The hallway was empty, and a phone vibration could tick anyone off.

I didn’t know how long I’d sat like this, shivering against the door. My eyes began to close, and I slowly began to nod off. I jostled awake again, slapping myself lightly on the face. I had to be ready, alert, and stay conscious. Sleep would be a weakness. I glanced at the time.

Ten minutes had passed.

I realized I had multiple miss calls and text messages from him. I was just about to call him back when I received an incoming message from him.
